The Importance of Conducting IT Audits: It’s Not as Scary as It Sounds

Let’s talk about IT audits. I know, I know, just the word “audit” might make some business owners uneasy. I’ve even worked for a company that was hesitant to mention IT audits to clients, afraid it would scare them off. But honestly? That mindset couldn’t be further from the truth. I love IT audits. Why? Because they give you a deep dive into your IT infrastructure, computers, software, the way your business operates, what’s working, what needs improvement, and where you can save money.

IT Audit

Why IT Audits Matter

Think of an IT audit as a health check-up for your business’s technology. You wouldn’t skip your annual doctor’s visit, right? So why ignore your IT? Here are some of the big questions an audit helps answer:

Is any of your IT equipment reaching its end of life (EOL)? Are all your devices and infrastructure receiving the necessary firmware and software updates? Have you outgrown your current IT setup? Would your business benefit from virtualization or a cloud-based solution? Is it time to transition to new and improved software? Are you meeting compliance requirements? Are you using the best cybersecurity solutions, like EDR or XDR? Are your IT contracts delivering the services you’re paying for? If you have a Managed Service Provider (MSP), are they holding up their end of the contract? Have you explored cost-saving IT solutions? Do you have an up-to-date inventory of your equipment? Do you have login credentials for all your systems and web-based tools? Are you happy with your IT support provider? If not, maybe it’s time to shop around. Have you outgrown your current internet speeds? Are you overpaying for IT solutions?

The Value of an IT Audit

Whenever I conduct an IT audit, I always start with invoices. It’s amazing how many businesses don’t fully understand what they’re paying for. Sometimes they’re leasing equipment while also owning some of it. Other times, they don’t have access to critical systems, like their firewall, because they’re locked into a contract that requires them to submit a support ticket for even minor changes.

For example, I once helped a company that was frustrated with their IT provider. They had no control over their firewall, had to wait days for simple support requests, and felt like they were overpaying.  After reviewing their invoices, I recommended a new approach:

Own their IT equipment outright so they had full access and control. Upgrade their backup solution at no additional cost, plus add PC backups at no extra charge. Switch to a more advanced XDR cybersecurity solution, saving them over $500 per year. After the upfront purchase of necessary equipment, they ended up saving nearly $2,000 annually.

Building Trust Through IT Audits

For me, being a trusted IT partner isn’t just about fixing things when they break. It’s about helping businesses optimize their technology, cut unnecessary costs, and stay secure. IT audits aren’t something to fear; they’re a powerful tool for improving efficiency, tightening security, and making sure you’re getting the best value from your IT investments.

So, when was the last time you had an IT audit? If it’s been a while (or never), now’s the perfect time to start. You might be surprised at how much you can save and how much smoother your business can run. Not sure who to start, book a call with me today!
