Network Traffic: More Than Just a Bad Joke

Writer's picture: ShayShay

I love a bad joke. In fact, one of my favorites is about network traffic, which drives my better half crazy. She rolls her eyes while I have a full belly laugh at my joke. Here it is:

People: "Why were you late to the meeting?" (the meeting is online) Me: "I'm so sorry, there was network traffic."

Like I said, bad jokes are my thing. But here’s the funny part, there’s actually some truth to it.

Have you noticed your devices getting slower for no reason? Websites take forever to load, files take longer to open or, even worse, you get the dreaded spinning circle of doom?

When was the last time you did a health check on your network? Many people set up their firewalls, switches, printers, and Wi-Fi access points and then forget about them until things start acting up. Just like your car needs regular oil changes and air in the tires, your network devices require maintenance, too.

These devices need updates to fix performance issues and patch security vulnerabilities like your computer. Have you ever noticed that rebooting your laptop often fixes Wi-Fi disconnection issues? That’s because updates sometimes require a reboot to take effect.

Not updating your firewall, switches, or wireless access points can leave you vulnerable to security threats and cause your network to slow down. A little preventative maintenance goes a long way in keeping your network running smoothly, so don’t get stuck in network traffic next time!
